Noely Mendoza’s “Sugar Beach”: A Bold Step into Filmmaking

Noely Mendonza

“In the realm of independent cinema, Noely Mendoza’s rise to directorial acclaim is nothing short of remarkable. Her debut feature, “Sugar Beach,” transcends the typical coming-of-age narrative, offering a profound exploration of themes like polyamory, queer identity, and the journey of self-discovery. This film, co-created with Zoe Manzotti, who also stars in the lead role, is a testament to Mendoza’s dedication to genuine storytelling, crafted through a partnership rooted in shared experiences and unwavering determination.

The inception of this cinematic journey began in 2020 during a casual meeting at Sage Cafe, Culver City, where Manzotti, an Amherst College alum like Mendoza, introduced a screenplay that sparked immediate intrigue.“I was captivated from the start,” Mendoza reminisces. Both shared a vision to depict stories of young women challenging societal norms. Mendoza’s background in documentary filmmaking, particularly her expertise in visual anthropology, brought a grounded, observational sensibility to the collaboration that became the hallmark of their work. A successful proof-of-concept led to festival recognition, allowing them to refine their script based on valuable audience insights.

Mendoza’s directorial approach is distinguished by her blend of personal insights with professional execution. Transitioning from documentaries to narrative filmmaking, she upheld a strong commitment to authenticity. Drawing from her own experiences as well as Manzotti’s, Mendoza crafted a film that resonates with authenticity, showcasing a high school throuple — a pioneering portrayal in cinema. Her objective was clear: to create a narrative where young queer viewers feel seen and valued, portraying polyamory and sexual exploration as natural while addressing potential challenges and societal reactions.

The production of “Sugar Beach” was a transformative experience for Mendoza. As she navigated the complexities of directing on a larger scale for the first time, she encountered significant personal challenges. However, the strength of her team provided essential support. The core cast, deeply familiar with their roles from the initial concept, brought dedication and trust, while her cinematographer, with whom she shared a strong rapport, contributed to a nurturing environment. This atmosphere enabled genuine performances to unfold. “When people are in a space where they feel safe and understood, performances happen organically,” Mendoza reflects.

In terms of visuals and sound, “Sugar Beach” is characterized by its intimate and grounded aesthetics. Collaborating with composer Chelsea McGough, Mendoza crafted a minimalist score that weaves strings, piano, guitar, and synths, complementing the film’s narrative balance of grief and youthful hope. This restrained approach in music and sound design ensures viewers remain engaged with the characters’ emotional journeys.

One of the film’s most thrilling aspects is its role as the first installment in a planned trilogy. While “Sugar Beach” stands as a complete narrative, it sets the stage for future explorations in “Blue Underwater World” and “Mudslides.” These films will delve into the characters’ continued evolution, addressing themes of addiction and grief, while expanding on Mendoza’s fascination with nature’s healing power — a motif deeply connected to California’s diverse landscapes and the multifaceted experiences of women of color.

Raised in Santa Barbara and drawing from her Mexican-American roots, Mendoza’s personal history enriches the film’s narrative and setting. Her portrayal of coastal Californian towns reflects a complex interplay of external beauty and internal pressures. Influences from notable filmmakers like Dinorah de Jesús Rodríguez, Sean Baker, and Alfonso Cuarón, among others, helped Mendoza meld raw realism with cinematic allure. A nod to “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” is evident in a particularly poignant scene.

Despite facing industry challenges, particularly as young filmmakers of color, Mendoza and her team have crafted a film that stands out for its authenticity and distinct perspective. “Sugar Beach” is more than a film; it’s a catalyst for dialogue on topics like queer joy, addiction, and the vital importance of representation in the arts.

Noely Mendoza’s directorial debut is a powerful declaration of resilience and creative vision. “Sugar Beach” not only heralds the emergence of a formidable new talent but also lays the groundwork for a trilogy that promises to explore the intricacies of love, loss, and self-discovery. For Mendoza, this film is a landmark achievement and an invitation for more diverse voices to enrich the cinematic landscape.
