Rutherine Umali Confirms Latest Film Projects & More
Q. Rutherine, it’s so great to have you! Can you share with us your latest film projects or any other news ?
Rutherine Umali – A: The latest movie project I was involved in is called “Boneyard,” starring Mel Gibson and 50 Cent.
Q. As an actress and singer, can you explain how you got started singing and what genre would you explain your music style as ?
Rutherine Umali – A: When I was around 6 years old, my mom got me and my brothers a karaoke machine for kids. I took interest in singing and I would use it more than my siblings. I then started to join singing competitions in schools and in the neighborhood as young as 1st grade. I remember it would annoy me why they would always need my parents consent and not let me join. I didn’t understand that when I was young. I thought I was old enough to make a decision by myself and didn’t want to bother my mom with little things. When I heard of the competition date, I would take notes in my heart and just go that day without registering. I didn’t know the process. Sometimes they would feel sorry for me because I was there early and stayed by the stage waiting for my turn, so they’d let me perform. Looking back, it’s not even a kid’s competition, so I never won. I was just happy to sing on stage, then go home. My heart wasn’t to compete. Singing is something that I do with or without a stage. I’d always sing at home, especially gospel songs. You might ask how I could leave the house by myself. My mom works hard every day, so she’s always gone. My dad lives in Las Vegas; we lived in the Philippines at that time. We were left with three maids in the house, and the maids do not have a say in what we do or want. So I would leave the house and do things on my own. When the sun goes down, we know we have to be home or we would be in trouble. One doesn’t have to be super rich to have maids in the Philippines. Maids are common in every home.
Q. Any new hobbies or activities taken up lately?
Rutherine Umali – A: I’ve been more interested in playing the piano lately because churches have been asking me to sing during worship. I’ve lost my passion in singing after COVID happened, but because churches have been asking me to sing, my passion in singing is now reviving.
