Review: Passionate Piano Moments by Tito Abeleda

Passionate Piano Moments is an incredible opportunity to better understand the complexities of Tito Abeleda’s compositions!

Tito Abeleda

Tito Abeleda has an exciting new way to enjoy his music. The Fort Lauderdale, Florida-based musician and composer is releasing a new piano sheet music book titled Passionate Piano Moments, a collection of original music as well as unique arrangements of holiday classics just in time for Christmas. The 155-page book contains excellently transcribed versions of Abeleda’s classical, cinematic orchestrations that make his intricate compositions accessible to the solo pianist and allow for an additional layer of appreciation for his work. Featuring selections from his albums L’Heure de la Mort, Pathos, O Holy Night, and I Feel, this piano book contains a plethora of emotive, passionate pieces as well as gorgeous imagery to illustrate the feeling of each song.

The songbook begins with “Drifting” off of the 2020 album L’Heure de la Mort that was inspired by the current global pandemic. “Drifting” is the perfect song to usher you into this publication with its inviting, flowing arpeggios. The next song is “Dying Breath” off of the same album, a hauntingly beautiful piece in a moderate tempo that tells a heartbreaking story through a repetitive melody and restrained emotion.

“Missing You” off of his release Pathos is the next song in the book, boasting an intricate balance of pensive arpeggios that slowly shift as the song continues. “Beautiful Memories” follows; it is a darker, faster composition that is elegantly powerful. Showcasing Abeleda’s talent for weaving complex melodies, this addition is an inviting challenge for the pianist who enjoys an intense piece.

Off of his holiday release O Holy Night, Abeleda’s arrangement of the classic holiday song “Silent Night, Holy Night” is a true testament to his unique talent and vision as a composer. While still presenting the core themes of the song, his dramatic additions reinvigorate the beloved tune in his own thoughtful and cinematic way. His rendition of the song “O Holy Night” is also included as an intriguing, moving take on this holiday staple.

Following “Silent Night, Holy Night” is “Forever Touched by Your Love” off of Abeleda’s release I Feel, a heartfelt and emotional peace that speaks volumes as soft notes evolve into a fluttering frenzy. The use of triplets in this piece creates a sense of urgency within the calm, almost as if it were trying to fit a long story into one breath. “Running, Searching” from Pathos is next, the perfect piece for the experienced pianist looking for a workout. This song is an immaculate, fast-paced feat showcasing Abeleda’s knack for taking classical elements and presenting them with an exciting, modern voice. As the title suggests, your fingers will have completed a marathon by the end of playing this song.

Passionate Piano Moments is an incredible opportunity to better understand the complexities of Tito Abeleda’s compositions.

“Phoenix Rising” is the next song in the book, another composition that boasts strategic triplets to create a sense of urgency and disconnect resulting in a jarring experience full of dynamic turns. After this intense tune, “Tempus Fugit” whisks you away in an impressive barrage of sixteenth notes that tell a winding tale without a second to pause.

The final two pieces in the book are created for multiple pianos, a fascinating inclusion that proves Abeleda’s genius for complexity and orchestration. “Descensus ad Infero” off of L’Heure de la Mort is a piano duet in which the first piano mainly plays the higher melodies while the second plays the lower tones creating a chorus of reflecting notes. The two parts occasionally branch off from each other as the first piano carries the flutter of eighth notes and the second piano takes the ominous bass notes of the melody. The final piece of the book, “Procession in D Minor”, is an even more complex display that calls for a piano quartet. Each piano piece perfectly weaves into the others, at times switching between the responsibilities of carrying the melody, driving the rhythm, or adding flourishes of notes that complete the score.

Passionate Piano Moments is an incredible opportunity to better understand the complexities of Tito Abeleda’s compositions. Intermediate and advanced pianists can benefit greatly from playing these stunning songs as they are demystified from soundwaves to notes on a page. This publication contains only masterpieces that will be an exciting addition to the modern pianist’s repertoire.
