Adapting to the Pace: Nancy Rizk Shares the Nuances of TV vs. Film Preparation

The demands of television and film, while both requiring deep character immersion, differ significantly in their pace. Actress Nancy Rizk articulates this distinction with seasoned clarity, highlighting the adaptability crucial for success in either arena.

“When I’m preparing for TV or streaming, it’s usually very fast-paced,” Nancy explains. “Most of the time, we receive the sides the night before, so you really have to be on your A-game.” For Nancy, the “off-seasons” are not periods of rest but rather opportunities to keep her “body and brain sharp.” Once a script and call sheet arrive, her focus narrows immediately to the scenes scheduled for filming the next day. The ability to concentrate intensely and deliver under pressure showcases her discipline. Occasionally, a full script is a luxury, allowing for deeper preliminary character development. However, Nancy recalls an instance on a TV show where the character’s background was intentionally withheld by the producer. “I had to completely create it myself,” she recounts, showcasing her innate creativity and problem-solving prowess in the face of ambiguity.

Film, by contrast, offers a more expansive canvas for preparation. “You usually get the entire script up front, which gives you time, sometimes months to break it down, understand your character arc, and really prepare,” Nancy shares.

The Art of Transformation: Physical and Emotional Depth

Character transformation is the true heartbeat of Nancy’s artistry. Over her two-decade-long career, she has undergone countless physical, emotional, and energetic shifts for roles, each demanding a unique embodiment. Pinpointing a single “most dramatic” transformation is challenging, but horror films consistently emerge as a genre pushing her to the extremes.
“Horror films usually demand the biggest transformations emotionally, physically, and energetically,” Nancy asserts. “The intensity is real.” Beyond the demands of the genre, cultural and linguistic immersion has also led to profound personal and professional shifts. Nancy describes roles where she had to speak Arabic, a language she fluently commands. “When I tap into characters from the third-world experience, that hits something very personal,” she shares. “It’s confronting at times, especially when the themes reflect deep cultural or societal truths.”

Grounding Film Characters in Truth: The Core of Authenticity

Regardless of how vastly different her characters may be from her own persona, Nancy’s commitment to authenticity remains her guiding principle. Her process begins and ends with truth.

“I always start from truth,” Nancy Rizk explains. Whether a character is grounded or wild, dark or comedic, her fundamental question is, “What is their truth, and how can I embody that without judgment?” To physically and emotionally inhabit a role, Nancy employs breathwork and somatic techniques, allowing her to “drop into the role physically, so I’m not just ‘acting,’ I’m living it through my body.” Her talent is about an organic flow. “I just let the character flow through me by staying connected, present, and honest,” she emphasizes. For Nancy, every character, no matter how unlike herself, deserves to be “fully felt,” showing her profound discipline and respect for the storyline.

Embracing Range: Comfort Zones and New Projects

Nancy’s artistic range is a hallmark of her career. While she naturally gravitates towards certain roles, she also actively seeks out roles that challenge her, expanding her capabilities and understanding.

“I’m naturally drawn to strong, emotionally layered women, whether they’re fierce, funny, or flawed,” she reveals. “I love characters with depth and contradictions.” Comedy, surprisingly, has also become a cherished space for her. “Comedy is something I’ve grown to love even more over time. It’s so refreshing and freeing.” Conversely, roles that truly push her outside her comfort zone often involve “darker themes or characters with a completely different cultural, moral, or emotional compass” than her own. Yet, these are precisely the roles that ignite her artistic curiosity. “And that’s the beauty of it,” she reflects, “it forces me to expand and meet the unknown.” This willingness to venture beyond the familiar is integral to her continuous evolution as an actor.

The Impact of Honesty: Memorable Performances in Today’s Cinematic Industry

In an era saturated with content, what truly distinguishes a performance and makes it memorable? For Nancy, the answer is simple and profound: truth.

“Truth. Always truth,” she states unequivocally. “No matter the genre, budget, or style, when an actor drops into pure presence and the performance is rooted in honesty, the audience feels it.” She believes that in today’s world, there is an innate human craving for “connection and realness more than ever.” A truly impactful performance transcends mere viewing; it becomes an experience. “A performance becomes memorable when it’s not just watched but felt, when it opens something up in the viewer, makes them think, or lingers long after the scene is over.”

Decades of Experience in Acting – Nancy Rizk Explains Process of Nailing the Audition: Impressing Yourself First

With years of experience in the film industry, Nancy offers a refreshingly introspective piece of advice for aspiring actors regarding auditions: Impress yourself first.

“Honestly? Impress yourself,” she advises. This philosophy shifts the focus from external validation to internal preparation and self-assurance. “Don’t go in trying to be what you think they want, just do the work, know your character inside out, and show up fully…what’s meant for you won’t miss you.” Nancy candidly admits to the stress she once associated with auditions. “I used to stress so much about auditions, but over the years I’ve realized you never really know how close you are. Sometimes you’re in the top two and don’t even hear about it.” This realization has liberated her, allowing her to approach every audition, whether in-person or taped, with total commitment. “So now, whether I’m walking into the room or sending in a tape, I give it everything and walk away proud.” For Nancy, the outcome is secondary to the process and personal growth. “If it’s meant for you, it’ll come. And if not, it’s still a win because you’ve grown.”

By consistently grounding her characters in truth and embracing every challenge as an opportunity for growth, Nancy not only delivers memorable performances but also inspires and influences artists to explore the endless potential of authentic storytelling.
