About the Author: Cliff R. Jean-Philippe (M.S. Ed in Music Education/NYS TESOL cert. K-12) is a professional musician and ESL teacher in NYC, where he works with adult ESL students in multi-level classes that are culturally diverse. His students’ ages range from 18 to 78 years old and they come from almost every part of the world.  

Carly Cardinal Sings the Blues

Carly Cardinal Sings the Blues is a story about a young female cardinal who lives in New York City’s Central Park. She is befriended by a blue Jay named Janiece whose family has just moved in from the city of Chicago. Janiece, being slightly older than Carly, takes her “under her wing” and teaches her how to sing five of the foundational scales found in western harmony, culminating in her ability to sing the blues scale. Throughout the story, young readers will learn some things about ornithology, botany, music theory, and appreciating cultural diversity.
