Just Fame got a chance to interview artist Reggae Selecta UK aka Antony Elkington. We got insights into the creative process he follows while making music, his source of inspiration and much more!
Q. First of all, welcome! How are you doing?
Reggae Selecta UK: Good as can be, thank you.
Q. Your latest single Go Hard Riddim is wonderful! Please share with us how did you come across the idea for this single?
Reggae Selecta UK: Well it is a Riddim I have had for a while and was unsure on who and what would be the right way to produce on it. It’s a riddim which I felt would bring a different vibe and coincide with my Freestyle Show as it is a freestyle type beat.
Q. What exactly is the creative process that you follow while making your music?
Reggae Selecta UK: I first of all think of the type of song which I want to work on and ensure it is current in Dancehall/Reggae scene. I then create it with with an engineer telling them exactly what type of sound I am looking for. Once the beat is ready I will start looking at artist who best fit the beat and are currently working hard.
Q. Your freestyle shows have become popular in Jamaica! How did you embark on that path?
Reggae Selecta UK: I have always been a big fan of the music and growing up my father was always blasting reggae and had me watching shows like Reggae Sumfest and Sting. So when I started doing my DJ work I wanted to engage more with the artists and create a show where they would perform. I felt the freestyles would be good for that and easy too as we our crowd is online. I reached out to Ace Media who is a videographer and we worked out a structure to make it work.
Q. What motivates you and what inspires you in your life?
Reggae Selecta UK: I like the music so much so really enjoy what I do although it can be stressful and things can always go wrong but knowing I am doing something I enjoy also helping young talents progress is rewarding. I have a young family so they also motivate me to keep focused and motivated.
Q. Who has been a major influence in your life?
Reggae Selecta UK: Mainly people I have met along the way, there have been a few who have made me realise the importance of helping others and doing something you enjoy. Mainly family
Q. Who are your 3 favorite artists and why?
Reggae Selecta UK: This is a difficult one as there are so many. In terms of current mainstream artists and music only not necessarily as individuals. I would say Popcaan, Masicka and Kanye West. These are artists who have worked hard to get where they are and importantly consistent in their music. Most of their songs are fire.
Q. Any tips or advice for the young aspiring artists?
Reggae Selecta UK: Stay Focused, humble, organized and active!
Q. What lies ahead for you in the coming years? What next? Any collaboration plans with other artists?
Reggae Selecta UK: Yes right now aside from the Go Hard Riddim, I am working on another project with Ace Media called the Rebirth Riddim with some real talented young artists. We are also stepping up the freestyle and working with a sponsor in the near future
